Editorial Q and A (April 21-27)

Name: Curtis Wildfong

What beach/lake do you like to go to during the summer? I’ve gone 1,000 times, but I still really enjoy the beach in Grand Haven. I went there almost every weekend in high school and now I’m looking forward to introducing my daughter, who is 18 months old, to the same beach. She’s such a little fish already.

What do you like/dislike most about the social media app Instagram? This question is impossible for me to answer. For being 28 years old I’m pretty social media illiterate. I have a Facebook page, which mostly consists of snarky remarks and one-liners. I have Twitter, but really only use if for work. I guess I’m old fashioned in the sense I’d rather have a face-to-face with someone than creepily click through their profile to see what they’re up to. If Facebook is the only resource I have for keeping up to date with someone, they aren’t a close enough friend for me to care.

What beach/lake do you like to go to during the summer? I can’t remember the last time I’ve been to a beach other than on vacation. As for lakes, I frequent Clifford Lake and Maston Lake often all summer long. We pontoon and bonfire it up all summer long at my friend John’s place on Clifford Lake and at April’s mom’s home on Maston Lake. We’re there, at least, every other weekend, if not every weekend.

What do you like/dislike most about the social media app Instagram? I like Instagram because it’s quick and easy to use. I like being able to get creative with different pictures and the way it almost makes my photos look like a professional has taken them. I don’t really have any dislikes with Instagram.

What beach/lake do you like to go to during the summer? My personal favorite is the Muskegon River, which is essentially a lake thanks to the Hardy Dam. You haven’t truly experienced summer in Michigan until you’ve spent a day vacationing at “Party Cove” by taking a boat to the unofficial beach just north of the dam.

What do you like/dislike most about the social media app Instagram? Like: ability to quickly re-share to other social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Dislike: not enough variety in the preset filters.

In the works:
• Belding Area Schools Board of Education meeting, 7 p.m., April 21, Administration Building
• Feature story on retired Belding police officer Judy Taylor, who served 32.5 years

What beach/lake do you like to go to during the summer? There are several beaches I enjoy visiting and we are fortunate to have so many options in the area. I will often pack a backpack and get the boys to hop on their bikes to ride to Baldwin for an afternoon. For a quick drive, Meyers Lake Beach is nice with pavilions and picnic tables. When I lived in Oregon, I often went to Silver Falls State Park and would picnic on the small beach.

What do you like/dislike most about the social media app Instagram? I am unqualified to answer as I do not have an Instagram account. I am pretty removed from technology when I am home.

What beach/lake do you like to go to during the summer? I’m one of those lucky/smug guys who live on a lake. All I need do is walk out my front door and there it is. I still hit Lake Michigan — usually Saugatuck or Ludington — three or four times a year, but honestly, the allure of being able to just walk down to my boat, hop in and start catching fish on a Saturday morning is just too strong. It often seems pointless to go anywhere else.

What do you like/dislike most about the social media app Instagram? What do I like about Instagram? Uh, the name, I guess. I used it a couple times and then, in an epiphany not unlike the one experienced by Saul on the road to Damascus, I discovered I didn’t really feel an overwhelming urge to share every detail of my life in pictures. The time I waste on Facebook is bad enough; I’d rather live my life than chronicle it via some trendy app. Seriously, no Instagram for me! For those who feel they just can’t live without photos of what I ate for breakfast, please e-mail me and I’ll put you in touch with a good therapist.

In the works:
• Lakeview School Board meeting Monday evening
• Feature piece on woman who overcame a serious problem with diabetes
• Working on my Reality Check column, maybe one on how I need to kick my Facebook addiction

What beach/lake do you like to go to during the summer? It’s always been Lake Michigan. All the big state parks are fine, but I like Kirk Park in Ottawa County a lot. It has a nice shady picnic area and a small, but usually not overcrowded beach. It’s a great starting spot for a bike ride, as well.

What do you like/dislike most about the social media app Instagram? I like how simple it is. It’s a great was to see many interesting photos quickly. I don’t like it when people share a bunch of photos at once and when people post poor or uninteresting photos. That’s what Facebook is for.

In the works:
• Running the Boston Marathon, then vacation time in Vermont and Montreal

What beach/lake do you like to go to during the summer? The lake in my backyard.

What do you like/dislike most about the social media app Instagram? I like how Instagram makes editing photos quick and easy and I enjoy seeing my friends’ unique snapshot perspectives of the world around them. Instagram is probably my favorite social media app because it encourages thoughtful, quiet viewing of photos, as opposed to the rapid-fire pace of Twitter’s news feed or the drama queen time suck that is Facebook.

In the works:
• Meeting with officials from Carson City-Crystal Area Schools on Monday, April 21, to hear about their upcoming bond request on the May 6 ballot.
• Keeping track of candidates filing for August’s primary election (deadline is Tuesday, April 22)

What beach/lake do you like to go to during the summer? I need to explore more of the lakes and rivers in W. Michigan (and kayak them!), but you can’t go wrong with Baldwin Lake. My favorite is Murray Lake in Lowell. I can retire there. The most favorite is Sand Dunes, 15 minutes west of my hometown, St. Ignace. Tons of elbow room and no rocks!

What do you like/dislike most about the social media app Instagram? Totally love the effects options and love that it encourages you to be artistic with your photo-taking. What I dislike most about it is that it isn’t as popular with my mass of friends just yet. I do like the idea of making it a more useful tool for our community news here at The Daily News. Definitely a fun phone app.
