Editorial Files Q and A (May 12-18)

Name: Bruce Bentley

Did you or would you participate in the Facebook popular Cold Water Challenge? I did participate after being called out twice, once because of Scoop. I jumped into Baldwin Lake in Greenville on Saturday afternoon. The temperature was mid-50s, but the wind was kicking and, obviously, the water was extremely cold. I’m also going to donate to a charity or benefit. It seems that is what this whole this is about, not just jumping into cold water.

What memory sticks out the most from your high school graduation? I graduated on June 16. The guys wore black, it was an outdoor ceremony and it was about 100 degrees. It was an uncomfortable ceremony, hot and sticky, but awesome still being done with high school.

In the works:
• Central Montcalm baseball at Fifth Third Ballpark on May 12
• Central Montcalm baseball and softball at Lakeview on May 13
• Belding baseball and softball invitationals on May 17 (also my daughter Addyson’s first birthday)

Name:  Elisabeth Waldon

Did you or would you participate in the Facebook popular Cold Water Challenge? No. Why would I want to jump into cold water? If I want to donate money to a good cause then I will, no strings attached.

What memory sticks out the most from your high school graduation? Being unsure about what to do next.

In the works:
• Montcalm County Board of Commissioners committee meetings Monday morning, May 12, in Stanton

Did you or would you participate in the Facebook popular Cold Water Challenge? I participated and I thought it was fun. I do believe anyone participating in it should donate SOMETHING to charity. I am donating to children with leukemia. I jumped in at Water Street Park in Belding. The water was cold but nothing worse than what I would experience up north in early summer. It did take my breath away for a second, though.

What memory sticks out the most from your high school graduation? I remember I kept telling myself not to trip going up and down the steps when going to accept my diploma. Thankfully, there were no epic moments, other than hugging my family once the ceremony was done. I did make the front page of our newspaper that week for the graduation story.

In the works:
• Working on the Danish Festival booklet (publishing June 27)
• Laying out the arduous Graduation tab (The Daily News, May 23)
• Laying out pages for S.H.E., which is themed “Prepping for higher education” (The Daily News, May 17)

Name: Stacie Rose

Did you or would you participate in the Facebook popular Cold Water Challenge? I did not participate in the cold water challenge, but think the idea behind it is good, benefitting worthy charitable causes.

What memory sticks out the most from your high school graduation? More so than the graduation, I remember the post graduation party at Montcalm Community College and the fun I had with my friends. I was really excited to get started on the next chapter of my life at college.

In the works:
• Editing honor graduate information from area high schools
• Home article on walls and rugs used both inside and out
• Working on an upcoming health story with the Healing Center in Lakeview

Name: Darrin Clark

Did you or would you participate in the Facebook popular Cold Water Challenge? I don’t really know what it is, but I try not to do anything voluntarily that will make me cold.

What memory sticks out the most from your high school graduation? The sole of my cheap dress shoe got caught on a curb and ripped right as I walked into DeVos Hall. I had to walk across the stage with a floppy shoe. It was pretty funny.

In the works:
• Every day editing, planning and designing The Daily News
• Have a few job performance reviews to do
• Need to get caught up on archiving and SmugMug postings

Name: Mike Taylor

Did you or would you participate in the Facebook popular Cold Water Challenge? No, I didn’t participate; I’m congenitally a non-joiner. I also would not jump off a bridge, walk through fire or play Russian Roulette simply because “everyone else was doing it.” My biggest gripe, though, is that I hate “guilt charity” efforts that make a big show of giving. When I donate money to my favorite charities, I prefer to do it privately, anonymously when possible. Of course, by admitting I donate, I just broke my own rule, so you can see how seriously I take all this…

What memory sticks out the most from your high school graduation? Wandering around a huge, outdoor concert venue with my prom date, Mindy Mullins, following the dance. The night was sensual; late-evening dew glistened on close-cropped moonlit lawns. Mindy wore a simple, pink dress both innocent and sultry. I was fully alive and awake, breathing in the future and exhaling the present. It was one of the most perfect nights of my life.

In the works:
• Covering Lakeview’s School Board meeting on Monday at 7 p.m. (Daily News, Tuesday)
• Writing up the Sheridan Village Council’s meeting at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday (Daily News, Wednesday)
• Covering MAISD meeting at 8 a.m., Wednesday (Daily News, Thursday)
• Writing my Reality Check column, maybe on my prom night; I think I’d like to explore that memory more fully (Daily News, Thursday)

Name:  Cory Smith

Did you or would you participate in the Facebook popular Cold Water Challenge? Due to my Cold Urticaria condition (allergy to cold temperatures), I declined to participate in the Cold Water Challenge. If I had the means to, I would donate the requested $100 to a charity for declining, but instead I will be donating a smaller amount to my cousin Robin Egan, who is running in the Fifth Third River Bank Run in honor of my late uncle, and her father, Kevin Smith.

What memory sticks out the most from your high school graduation? I will not name names, but my high school principal would not allow us to throw our graduation caps into the air. It’s a tradition exercised almost everywhere, but that wasn’t the case at Greenville High School. So, with my closest group of friends, we staged a “cap-thowing” photo outside after graduation, and to this day, it is one of my favorite photos.

In the works:
• Carson City-Crystal Area Schools Board of Education, 7 p.m., May 12, Administration Building, Carson City

Name: Curtis Wildfong

Did you or would you participate in the Facebook popular Cold Water Challenge? I never really understood how things like this become so popular, but it is because EVERYONE and their sister are doing it, I will not.

What memory sticks out the most from your high school graduation? I’d say one of the only memories I have from high school graduation is sneaking into the school the day before the ceremony and taping those little confetti cannons under each seat. Instead of throwing our caps, we shot confetti into the air.

In the works:
• Eureka Township meeting, Monday at 7 p.m.
• Montcalm Township meeting, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
• A story on the Greenville Area Community Foundation celebrating 25 years
